The Likeness

I just finished The Likeness by Tana French. What a great read - a smart, twisted murder mystery. I would say it is several levels above my “normal read” in terms of literature — if you remember, I read 12 Vince Flynn novels in the Summer of 2009 (when is that thirteenth book coming?). I have made a concerted effort to read more sophisticated books — e.g. Sarah’s Key and now, The Likeness.  I want to grow as I read, learn and experience more, normally through the eyes of someone outside of Manhattan.  So, this past week it was the story of Irish Cassie Maddox - a detective with a flaw, not an insidious flaw, a human flaw - she feels. She goes undercover in a bizarre “body double” scenario and ends up a bit too involved in her coverlife.  It was the perfect read for lounging on the beach and a few long plane rides. Sometimes it just feels good to put down the electronics, blogs, magazines and trade materials and just indulge in a guilty pleasure like a good murder mystery (that said, I did take time out to pre-order an iPad). Enjoy and let me know if you have any other recommendations.  I have Girl With a Dragon Tatoo, Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel and The Help in the queue.
